CLUB WATT

Project details

The location of Club WATT in Rotterdam had been closed for two years when entrepreneurs decided to renovate the building as a new music venue. To help meet the city of Rotterdam's targets to cut 50% CO2 emissions by 50% by 2025, they took on the challenge of building the first Sustainable Dance Club™.

Process

SDC started the process with creative workshops on sustainability and how it can be successfully integrated into a holistic business solution. That means People, Planet and Party have to be in balance, a combination that leading to long-term Profit.

Through consultation with the Club WATT organization we recommended sustainable components to implement, and devised a long-term strategy. This plan gave suggestions on how the club could integrate sustainability into the structure of the organization, and how to best communicate the core message to its audience.

Sustainable solutions

Club WATT made substantial savings on the consumption of energy (30%), water (50%), CO2 (50%) and waste (50%). In order to achieve these savings, the 'trias ecologicas' principle was used. That means:
Reduce need for general consumption
Produce as many of the resources needed in a sustainable way
Use the remaining resources as efficiently as possible
Using this method resulted in savings for the building and the organization. You can read all the details in this green handout.

Club WATT is closed

Unfortunately on June 16 Club Watt closed its doors. Rotterdam's steering committees lost their positive vision for WATT and were unable to see a way of saving the city's biggest pop stage. With or without the sustainable implementations, the costs for running the organization and renting the building were too high. Unfortunately WATT had no other choice but to close. The visitors to the venue over the years reiterate our view that it is a big loss for them and the city.
